Sofia Wacyk passed away peacefully on December 3, 2023 at the age of 98 in New York City, NY.  Born Sofia Balycka on July 26, 1925 in Sloboda Zolota distr. Berezany, Ukraine, as a young woman she emigrated to Germany where she met the love of her life Mykola Wacyk. They married in 1946 and ultimately settled in New York City in the East Village where they raised their two sons, Ihor and Steven and were active members of the vibrant Ukrainian community. Sofia was happiest when she was working and for 50 years spent every summer doing just that at Twin Pines, the family’s bungalow colony in upstate New York, gardening, painting and enjoying the company of the many families that stayed in the bungalows year after year.  Sofia was a loyal parishioner of St. George Ukrainian Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Ukrainian women’s league of America Chapter 1, St.George Rosary Group and volunteer at Streecha.

Sofia is survived by her sons Ihor (Marta), Steven (Lori) and grandchildren Roxolana (Tom) and Nicolas. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Mykola.
